Faculty extensionists from the Development Communication Department under the Institute of Arts and Sciences have launched a 3-day seminar titled “Project DATA: Digital Awareness and Training Advancement for Rural Women and Children through Media Literacy and Cybersecurity” this September 2024.
Now on its second day, Ms. Nikki Ann V. Macabontoc, the Development Communication Department Chairperson, led the conduct of the said seminar in collaboration with the Extension Services Office and Gender and Development Office. The program aims to empower rural women and children in selected areas of Bulacan by providing essential knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world, critically evaluate information, and practice safe cybersecurity habits.
Today’s session was held at the Farmers’ Training Center Cafeteria, BASC Compound, Pinaod, San Ildefonso, Bulacan, with selected parents of IAS students participating. Ms. Macabontoc began with a lecture on identifying fake news, evaluating information sources, and practicing safe online communication, followed by a fact-checking exercise.
The second speaker, Mr. Allain John Miguel Manabat, shared tips on recognizing potential cyber threats like phishing emails and suspicious links. He also explained how to respond to online threats, including reporting and avoiding engagement. Ms. Yrra Clarice L. Francisco, also a DevCom faculty member, followed with a discussion on understanding clickbait and sensationalism in media. Mr. Adrian Arbi D. Caseja wrapped up the program with a lecture on promoting digital empowerment and understanding digital footprints.
The first day of the seminar took place on September 17, Tuesday, at Barangay Basuit, San Ildefonso, Bulacan, with rural women and children from the barangay who participated in the activity.
