BASC ABE Department Hits International Milestone with Virtual Bioenergy Lecture

The
Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) Department of Bulacan
Agricultural State College (BASC) reached a significant milestone on October 6,
2026, successfully conducting an international guest lecture for its students
online via Zoom in partnership with Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia.
The virtual
gathering brought together third-year and fourth-year ABE students alongside
department faculty to explore emerging clean energy solutions. The session
centered on “Bioenergy as a Substitute for Internal Combustion Engine
Fuel,” addressing the critical push toward renewable energy in
agricultural machinery.
Organized by
Engr. Franz Z. Miranda, Faculty Member and International Relations Officer, and
Engr. Shiela Marie F. Gatchalian, ABE Program Chairperson, the webinar
officially opened with remarks from College of Engineering and Technology Dean
Dr. Alfredo L. Taluban, Jr., delivered on his behalf by ABE Faculty Member and
Associate Dean Engr. Darius R. Mendoza. In his address, Dr. Taluban emphasized
that bioenergy innovation connects classroom concepts with practical solutions
and urged participants to leverage the session for future research and academic
collaboration.
Introducing the
guest speaker, Engr. Miranda highlighted Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang Susilo’s
distinguished academic profile—spanning key executive roles at Universitas
Brawijaya, leadership of bioenergy and mechatronics facilities, advanced
doctoral research, and extensive experience as a principal investigator.
During his
lecture, Prof. Susilo addressed global fuel depletion and geopolitical energy
pressures, presenting key bioenergy substitutes including wood-based biopellets
to replace coal, high-octane bioethanol, biogas, and clean biohydrogen for
gasoline, as well as biodiesel for heavy-duty engines.
Attendees
participated in an interactive open forum with Prof. Susilo before the event
concluded with a closing message from Engr. Gatchalian and a group virtual
photo opportunity.
The landmark
initiative directly advances BASC’s commitment to delivering accessible,
high-quality education and driving sustainable development through
technological innovation. By exposing students to international expertise, the
department broadens global academic perspectives, inspires student research,
and prepares future biosystems engineers to lead clean-energy solutions in the
agricultural sector.
